LNG Market & Investments Analysis – February 25, 2025
Analysis: LNG’s Long-Term Growth and Investment Trends
The liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry is on a long-term expansion trajectory, with Shell forecasting a 60% surge in global LNG demand by 2040. This growth is fueled by three primary factors: Asia’s rapid industrialization, the decarbonization of heavy industries, and the rising power demands of artificial intelligence (AI). As economies in India, China, and Southeast Asia continue to expand, LNG is increasingly positioned as the bridge fuel of the future.
Meanwhile, Colombia is shifting toward LNG imports as domestic natural gas production struggles to meet demand, reinforcing LNG’s role as an energy security enabler. In Europe, the International Energy Agency (IEA) is advising a transition away from Russian LNG imports, recommending Qatari supply as a replacement by 2027. However, Qatar’s LNG buyers are demanding lower prices and greater flexibility, indicating that LNG contract structures are evolving toward more buyer-friendly terms.
Despite these trends, Woodside Energy reported a 13% drop in annual profits, highlighting the short-term volatility of LNG pricing and demand. Nevertheless, with gas and LNG trading profits projected to surpass oil, the LNG sector remains an attractive investment for long-term growth.
